There are several variables that need to be considered when buying a new skateboard. The first step toward choosing your new board is selecting a complete kit or separate pieces from your sporting goods store:
Complete Kits
If you’re a new rider, a complete kit might be the way to go. Complete kits come fully assembled and ready to ride. For a new rider, complete assembly allows you hit the skate park or sidewalk for practice right away! New skaters also need time to figure out how they ride and what components they like or dislike about a standard kit. If money is a factor, complete kits are also a more affordable way to go. A decent board can generally be purchased for less than $60.
Custom Boards
Experienced riders might want to consider customizing their boards. Once you’ve been skating for a while and are familiar with the feel and handle of different skateboards, you can begin to adopt a specific style of riding. By customizing your board you can get the style of wheels, trucks, or deck that you prefer. If you find yourself using your board for transportation, you might want to try a longer deck. If you feel like you spend most of your time at the skate park, you might want to go shorter and get some wheels with better grip. Custom skateboards are more expensive than complete kits, so you can also choose to customize an old board a little bit at a time.
